The Comedy School's

M O S A I C   P R O J E C T

Aims and Objectives:

Teach an ancient educational art form, accessible to all levels of ability.

Improve the quality of community spaces.

Create art work which affects people's behaviour and attitude towards their environment.

Raise and promote awareness, participation and ownership of an urban environment.

Give a sense of history and empowerment.

Develop interpersonal and team building skills.

Produce excellent results that are not only dazzling to the eye but extremely durable.

Project Outline:

Firstly, The Comedy School will visit PRU's or Schools, to introduce themselves and the project. A talk will be given on the process of mosaicing, portfolio will be shown, to show what is possible and then give a demonstration of cutting and laying the tiles. The students will be asked to think of ideas and designs around the theme of "Say No To Guns & Gangs."

The designs and ideas will be collected at a later date and discussed. The designs will be made into one big composition for the design for the mosaic panel measuring 4ft x 4ft.

Next the students will be invited to participate in small groups over the course of a week. All of the students will learn the whole process of mosaicing, starting with the cutting of the tiles into various shapes and then how to lay the tiles in different ways to achieve certain effects.

Finally, the mosaic is grouted, which is usually done without students as it's very labour intensive and messy.

The students will work as part of a team which will help develop their interpersonal and communication skills.

This is an ideal project for working with hard to reach groups as we are given the opportunity to discuss with them the consequences of gun and gang involvement.
